Quebec invests in a college-primary tutoring program

(Quebec) Quebec wishes to offer another tutoring option to students in difficulty.

Ministers Bernard Drainville (Education) and Pascale Déry (Higher Education) announced Monday an investment of nearly $325,000 in the À deux pas de la recherche Foundation.

This foundation aims to help children who attend primary schools in Lanaudière, in particular by offering them the possibility of being matched with a tutor who is a CEGEP student.

The tutors carry out their activities within the framework of a college course (Social Work Techniques, Childhood Education Techniques, Human Sciences, etc.).

On Monday, ministers described the initiative as a “win-win”. They announced that the $325,000 will make it possible to deploy this college-primary tutoring program throughout Quebec.

The money will be used to produce a deployment guide for the tutoring program, to offer start-up support and to create a web communication and twinning platform.

The latter will allow any CEGEP to implement this tutoring model independently, in conjunction with a school service center, we can read in a press release released Monday.

According to the government, around fifteen CEGEPs have so far demonstrated an interest in implementing the program, notably in Montreal, Estrie, Quebec and Abitibi.

Remember that under the Academic Catch-up Plan announced last January, approximately 175,000 primary and secondary students benefited from tutoring services.

College-primary tutoring is a complementary service that is added to the services already offered in schools.

“Tutoring is an important measure that provides concrete results in our schools for student success,” Mr. Drainville declared in a press release.

“I am therefore very happy with this form of college-primary tutoring, which has every chance of becoming a great success throughout Quebec.

“It’s an original way to help elementary students and give great life experiences to CEGEP students,” he added.

Minister Déry emphasized that the tutoring program created by the À deux pas de la voix foundation has proven itself in the Lanaudière region in recent years.

“I am very happy to see several college establishments across Quebec raise their hands to apply this innovative model, which promotes educational success,” she declared.

For his part, the president of the foundation, Alex Gagné, said he welcomed the ministers’ announcement and the granting of funds with “deep gratitude.”

“Two Steps to Success is a project carried out by young people for young people and, thanks to the funding announced today, new perspectives are opening up beyond the Lanaudière region.

“We will indeed be able to expand the scope of our program and this vital support to help an even greater number of young people and support them on the path to success,” he reacted in a press release.
