Putin gives the Russian government a week to prepare the action plan against Omicron

The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, ordered the government to prepare an action plan within the next week to combat the omicron variant of the coronavirus.

The president said that it is important to maintain supply of drugs, oxygen and hospital beds.

“First of all, it is necessary to constantly monitor the effectiveness of tests and vaccines, to use clear algorithms to reduce the spread of infection,” Putin told an investment forum on Tuesday.

Russia suffered its deadliest month from Covid-19 in October, before the emergence of the new omicron strain, and was forced to impose a nationwide closure of workplaces for a week in early November.

Cases and deaths are down but remain high. 33,860 new cases were reported Tuesday and 1,209 deaths in the last 24 hours from Covid-19.

Russia has yet to report cases of the omicron strain. The country has recorded more than 9.6 million Covid-19 infections since the start of the pandemic and 275,193 deaths.

Putin said the new strain had cast doubt on prospects for global economic recovery and underscored the importance of vaccine recognition and inoculation certificates.

The Russian vaccine Sputnik V has not yet received approval from the World Health Organization.
