Puebla’s metalworking sector recovers a third of the 43,000 jobs it lost due to the pandemic

Puebla, Pue. In the metalworking sector and foundry workshops of the National Chamber of the Transformation Industry (Canacintra) local, just over 15,000 jobs have been recovered from the 43,000 lost due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Leonardo Cárdenas, president of the local sector, explained that the casualties occurred during the start of the health contingency in 2020 and January of this year; however, from February to September there was a recovery due to projects that were taken up again in the industrial part.

He commented that there are factories with plans to expand their infrastructure, which they had postponed due to the pandemic and now want to resume, some for the remainder of this year and others for 2022.

“It is positive that in the industrial sector they want to reactivate projects that are considered to expand their productive capacity, because it gives us activity for up to six months as contractors,” he deepened.

He hoped that more jobs could be recovered for the rest of the year, but he sees it as difficult because employers are thinking about paying bonuses and catching up with their suppliers after being a difficult year.

Cárdenas trusted that the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 will allow to work more without ceasing to comply with sanitary measures, which will be maintained for a long time.

Reactivation

He mentioned that the reactivation to 100% of some plants to resume works to expand industrial buildings will help the sector that has more than 50% of its activity related to construction.

He commented that they have also been affected by the suspension of real estate or commercial projects that require metal structures, but that little by little they are being resumed with few personnel due to sanitary measures.

He indicated that throughout this year there was a 40% increase in steel, causing a shortage of inputs, because it is brought from abroad and this is detrimental by breaking the supply chain with companies, for example, in the auto parts sector.
