But organizers are pointing out that regular citizens can join the spirit of the games in running events.

There is currently space for community participants in a five-kilometre race on the evening of July 27, a 10-kilometre race on the evening of July 28, and a 21-kilometre half-marathon on the morning of July 30.

There’s also room for more runners in a five-kilometre cross-country race on the morning of July 27 and a 10-kilometre cross-country race on the morning of July 28.

“We think this opportunity to run with and in support of our first responders will be a special memory for a lot of people,” said Jan Wilson, general manager of the games.

Anyone interested in registering can look up the Can-Am Police-Fire Games on raceroster.com. Registration fees will benefit the Canadian Mental Health Association.

From 800 to 1,000 athletes representing police services, fire departments, and other emergency personnel from all over Canada and the US will be coming to Windsor for the official games July 25-31.

They’ll be doing battle in a huge variety of events — from basketball, hockey, and powerlifting to service skill activities such as duty pistol shooting and “toughest firefighter” challenges.

Organizers are also advising that there’s still room for golfers to play in the Can-Am Police-Fire Games golf tournaments, set to happen July 26-29. Those who work in emergency services fields interested in competing are asked to register now via windsor2022.ca or canampolicefiregames.org.
