Province to announce WSIB headquarters will move from Toronto’s Front Street to London, Ont.

The Ontario government is set to announce Tuesday morning that it’s moving the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board to London, Ont.

The timing of the move hasn’t been finalized.

In January, provincial Labor Minister Monte McNaughton told the Star that he wanted the agency to trim some of its real estate holdings.

“We know that there are huge opportunities to find efficiencies when it comes to the real estate. I mean, we have a call center on the most expensive real estate in the country,” said McNaughton, referring to its headquarters on Toronto’s Front Street.

Real estate sources say the tower at Front and Simcoe streets could be sold for as much as $600 million if it hits the market. Government sources say the WSIB owns a “significant majority” of the building.

The building includes 758,000 square feet of office space in a prime downtown location.

Currently, the WSIB Act requires the agency’s headquarters to be in Toronto. The province intends to amend the Act.
