Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court begins visit to Venezuela

The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, arrived on Sunday at Venezuela for a three-day visit in which he will meet with local authorities in the middle of the preliminary examination carried out by the international body on the South American country.

Since February 2018, the Prosecutor’s Office has been conducting a preliminary examination of Venezuela, prior to deciding whether or not to initiate a formal investigation and whether to accuse one or more people.

Last December, the Prosecutor’s Office said that there are grounds to believe that in the member nation of the OPEC crimes against humanity have been committed, at least since 2017, by authorities of the president’s government Nicolas Maduro.

“Prosecutor Khan is expected to know first-hand the progress of the State institutions and establish a dialogue of positive cooperation,” said state television when releasing images of the official with the foreign minister. Felix Plasencia at the international airport.

The visit, he added, will be three days and obeys an invitation made by the Venezuelan prosecutor, Tarek Saab.

No details have been released of Khan’s schedule in the country, part of his first tour since he took office in July and which had a first stop in Colombia last October 25. Relatives of those detained and killed by the Venezuelan authorities have asked to meet with the prosecutor.
