Health officials in Prince Edward Island report the first two COVID-19 deaths of the pandemic.

Public health director Dr. Heather Morrison says one person between the ages of 60 and 79 and one person over the age of 79 have died of COVID-19.

Prime Minister Dennis King issued a statement today extending his condolences to the families of the two people.

Officials also report 225 new cases of COVID-19.

Prince Edward Island has 1,994 reported active cases and has reported an average of 199 new infections per day for the last week.

Morrison says the number of hospitalizations related to COVID-19 is unchanged from the day before: eight patients, including one in intensive care.

There are now 14 child care and early learning facilities with COVID-19 cases, and Atlantic Baptist’s long-term care facility has 16 confirmed cases.

Some 95.9% of islanders over the age of 12 have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 92.6% have received two doses.

“Like all islanders, it is with a heavy heart that I received this news of our first COVID-19 related deaths,” King said.

“This is not an easy announcement to make and on behalf of all islanders I want to express our deepest condolences to the loved ones of these people.”
