PRI deputies condemn López Obrador’s criticism of UNAM

The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in the Chamber of Deputies expressed concern over the fact that the federal Executive manifests itself on issues that strictly correspond to the university community, after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador criticized the UNAM when expressing that it is regrettable that it has “turned right” in recent times.

“The federal deputies of the PRI sadly recall the attempts made by the State to subdue university freedom, so we are concerned that the authorities will once again manifest themselves on issues that strictly correspond to this community,” said the PRI members.

The parliamentary group condemned any type of interference and insist that there can be no influence of political power on the chair, the debate of ideas and academics and students, “since the struggle for autonomy is a reflection of the interest of the community for generating knowledge ”.

At the same time, they highlighted their concern about the permanent attack on the finances of all public universities, not only those of the state or the UNAM, but also the polytechnic and technological universities.

“In the PRI we warn that the latter are experiencing very difficult times due to the lack of resources, and what seems an abandonment, by the Mexican State … We consider that it is essential to prioritize education, science and research,” they stressed.
