President of the University of Prince Edward Island resigns due to health reasons

Halifax, NS –

The president of the University of Prince Edward Island resigned suddenly, citing health problems.

In a statement released Tuesday night, Alaa Abd-El-Aziz said he regrets having to make the decision, but the past few months have been difficult and his health has suffered.

Abd-El-Aziz has held the position for the past 10 years.

He said he will be leaving much earlier than planned and is disappointed that he will not be able to complete projects such as developing a medical school.

In 2017, Atlantic Business Magazine named Abd-El-Aziz one of the top 50 CEOs for the Atlantic region of Canada.

Abd-El-Aziz ends his statement by saying that he is grateful to the many colleagues and students he has worked with.
