Pork consumption in Mexico increased 19% in February: Sader


January 2022, 231,817 tons of Pork Meat, 18% more than the 195,738 tons registered in the same month of the previous year. In February, the upward trend continued, with a consumption of 215,374 tons, 19% more compared to the 181,429 tons observed in the same month of 2021.

This was reported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) after highlighting that in the first two months of the year it grew 2% compared to the same period in 2021, going from 270,664 tons to 275,742 tons. “This is a productive increase of more than 5,000 tons, the result, among other factors, of the actions carried out by the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica) to eradicate herd diseases from the country.

At the end of last year, pork production also showed an increase of 2.0% compared to 2020, going from one million 652,000 tons to one million 686,802, that is, 35,000 more tons, according to preliminary figures from the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP).

With these results, Mexico is the thirteenth producer of pork in the world, in addition to having opened markets to Mexican pig farmers, who each year sell more than 250,000 tons of products in countries such as Japan, the United States, Singapore, Canada , South Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Chile and China.

It should be noted that recently the Secretariats of Agriculture and Rural Development and Economy, in coordination with the Opormexlaunched the Mexican Institute of Pig Farming (IMP), whose objective is to promote scientific and technological research and bring it closer to small and medium-scale producers.
