Police say separate downtown assault, gun calls likely related

Windsor police say an assault and an incident involving a gun that occurred more than an hour apart in the same downtown area are likely connected.

The first call, for an assault causing bodily harm, came in at 11:45 pm Thursday. It was reported that a man had been injured following an argument in the 500 block of Ouellette Avenue.

Police said the dispute involving several people started outside a bar. The argument escalated and a man was assaulted, police said. The victim suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police were still in the area when they spotted a man that matched a description of the alleged attacker. They arrested him.

A 24-year-old Windsor man is facing a charge of assault causing bodily harm. He was released from custody and given a future court appearance date.

Then, at 1:05 am, patrol officers were sent to the same block of Ouellette for a firearms call. Someone reported seeing a gun inside a car full of people.

Officers found the vehicle, a gray 2009 Toyota SUV, on the move near University Avenue West and Victoria Avenue. When they stopped the vehicle, police said one person jumped out and fled on foot.

Officers caught up and arrested him after a brief struggle. During the foot chase, police said the suspect allegedly tossed something on the ground. It turned out to be a gun, according to investigators.

A 19-year-old Windsor man is facing a charge of resisting arrest and multiple gun-related charges.

Police said a 17-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy who where in the car were also arrested on firearms charges. To protect the identity of the two young offenders, police said they are not naming any of the suspects.

Officers also seized the SUV.

Police are asking citizens in the area where the incidents occurred to check surveillance footage for potential evidence in both the assault and firearm investigations.
