Police hate crimes unit investigates after Edmonton mosques receive mystery white powder

Edmonton police hate crimes investigators are looking into incidents of white powder being mailed to two city mosques within the past week.

The white powder was found to be an “innocuous substance” in both cases, but the National Council of Canadian Muslims expressed alarm in a Thursday statement, calling the incidents “an apparent anthrax scare.”

According to NCCM, when an employee at one mosque opened the package, white powder landed on their skin and clothes.

Following the NCCM’s public concerns, the Edmonton Police Service confirmed in a statement that they are investigating. EPS said an “unknown white powder” was mailed to a mosque at 43 Street and 33 Avenue last Friday, and another mosque at 61 Avenue and 172 Street received a similar package Thursday.

The NCCM encourages anyone who receives a suspicious package to contact police.

“While we do not want members of our community to unduly panic, we want to be clear that this is concerning.”
