Place for readers | How do you welcome the legacy of the Cowboys Fringants?

The final album of Cowboys Fringants, unveiled ten days ago, arouses strong emotions among admirers of the group in mourning of its singer Karl Tremblay. We have identified some testimonials from fans who responded to our call to all. One observation: the great Karl will not go out “through the back door” with this testament album.

In great communion

Very touching as a final album. I even had a very moving moment listening to the album on the bus to work that Thursday morning. Looking up, I realized that the majority of people on the bus had the same thing on their screens and in their ears: the new Cowboys album. As if, on this Thursday morning, we were all gathered in great communion to listen to Karl’s latest project.

Beautiful feelings… sad at times

My boyfriend puts gas in the car this morning and I open the 98.5 while waiting… The song The end of the show plays, I listen attentively to the lyrics for the first time and I collapse… Today, April 25, is my son Max’s birthday, he would have been 35 years old, he hasn’t been with us for 15 years. Car accident at age 20. Tell you how much we miss him! But what a coincidence that I’m listening to this song this morning from a guy who is going to do his last show. My Max’s favorite group! (…) Bravo for this magnificent album full of beautiful feelings… sad at times.

A touching voice

I liquefied. Being 52, almost 53… The end of the show ran into me. The lyrics take on a completely different dimension, Karl’s voice is touching. I thought of him, of his partner and his daughters, of my son, of my life, of my fear of growing old, of my fear of death… Thank you to the group for this generosity.

I lose valuable allies

I don’t really know if this final album breaks me or puts a balm on my heart. Both, I think.

Les Cowboys Fringants are intimately linked to the construction of my identity. This is the crossroads of the book Earth Sickness by Hubert Reeves, by Laure Waridel The other side of the plate and songs from Cowboys Fringants who brought out in me, more than 20 years ago, the committed woman that I have become. Greenpeace, Équiterre and now Mothers at the Front, I am a long-time activist. A mother and a teacher determined to leave a viable environment to her children, her students and all the children of the world.

I am infinitely sad to lose this unique group who knew how to skillfully write powerful lyrics to exhilarating tunes! Who else can sing about the end of the world (8 seconds) in a Bell Center full of excited people? It was beautiful. Powerful. I feel like I’m losing valuable allies.

This album without tour, without show, without Karl on stage is another immense mourning. Who soothes and who tortures. Next mourning: Midsummer and a summer of festivals without them. Thank you to our Cowboys and good luck to all Cowboys at heart!

A link between generations

Les Cowboys Fringants is also a link between generations. I am 70 years old. I became aware of the group decades ago through observing my nephew’s, now in his 40s, enthusiasm for their music. Yesterday, this same nephew sent me the link to The end of the show : monumental!

An icon of our Quebecness

We receive it like a letter that gets lost and is finally delivered after a friend leaves too quickly. The tears have dried and we find ourselves smiling, even with texts that are heartbreaking. There will be many more listens and I will surely re-watch some of the video clips filmed a few meters from him on August 18 during his last big lap, but for sure, this last “goodbye” already feeds the legend of an icon of our Quebecness!
