Peso falls against the dollar after Vladimir Putin’s announcement on Ukraine

The Mexican peso depreciated this Monday against the American dollarafter news about Ukraine and Russia. The local currency lost ground in a session with few changes due to a lower volume in operations with a holiday in the United States.

The exchange rate ended the day at 20.3112 units against a record of 20.2917 on Friday, with official data from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico). This means that the peso lost 1.95 cents, equivalent to a variation of 0.10 percent.

The cross traded in a range between a high of 20.3235 units and a low of 20.2491 units. The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback with a basket made up of six reference currencies, rose 0.05% to the level of 96.09 points.

While news of a US-Russian agreement to hold a summit between their presidents was optimistically welcomed by markets in the morning, this was later rejected by the Kremlin, which further ratcheted up nervousness.

The Russian President, Vladimir Putinrecognized this Monday in a televised statement the independence of the pro-Russian separatist regions of eastern Ukraine, a decision denounced by the West that aggravates this geopolitical crisis.

“As for those who have seized power in Kiev and hold it, we demand that they immediately stop military operations or further bloodshed will befall the regime on Ukrainian territory,” he said in his speech.

Western countries, led by the United States, have warned almost since the beginning of this year about the high possibility of Russia invading Ukraine, through military forces that it placed near the borders with Ukraine.
