Peso appreciates due to dollar decline after US inflation

The Mexican peso was appreciated this Wednesday against the American dollar. The local currency gained ground supported by inflation figures for December in the United States that were in line with what analysts expected.

The exchange rate ended trading at 20.3570 units against yesterday’s record of 20.4059 units, with data from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico). That meant a gain for the peso of 4.89 cents or 0.24 percent.

The cross operated in a limited range between a maximum of 20.4453 units and a minimum of 20.3167 units. At the close of Banxico, the Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the green bill against six currencies, fell -0.71% to 94.94 points.

U.S. consumer prices rose sharply in the final month of 2021 as rentals and used cars maintained their robust gains, capping their highest year-over-year rate in nearly 40 years.

However, the figures (7% annual and 0.5% monthly) were not so high as to modify the bets of a tightening of the monetary policy by the Fed, which is expected to start raising rates in March.

The dollar had gained ground against most currencies in recent days as the market was betting on an increase in the price of money in the United States before March, after the minutes of the Fed.
