Peru loses 400 million dollars in copper exports after conflict in “Las Bambas”

The Las Bambas mining company reported that the country loses nearly 400 million dollars in copper exports and more than S/220 million (60 million dollars) in income, after 42 days of stoppage of its activities in the Apurímac region, due to the invasion of their land by the comuneros.

Through a statement, the mining company regretted that an agreement was not reached at the meeting this Wednesday at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers between officials, members of six communities and representatives of Las Bambas.

“We salute the effort of the Government of Peru to establish a dialogue that leads to resuming the operations of the Las Bambas mining company, suspended since April 14 due to the illegal invasion of its land and that, after 42 days of the stoppage, has generated losses due to close to 400 million dollars in exports”, he mentioned.

He indicated that an agreement was not reached due to the position of the six peasant communities in conditioning the liberation of the invaded land and the resumption of operations to the correction of alleged breaches that they do not specify.

“Many of them are new demands not recorded in previous agreements and among them are schemes not contemplated in the current legal system, such as 50% of the profits of Las Bambas mining company in exchange for an alleged contribution of land, which already they were acquired and paid by Las Bambas to the community itself in 2013″, he said.
