Perspective Québec Scholarships: let’s avoid hasty conclusions

In recent days, we have opened a discussion about the relevance of the Perspective scholarships.

Coming into effect in fall 2022, the Perspective Québec scholarship program aims to increase student numbers in disciplines experiencing a labor shortage and which are considered strategic by the Quebec government (engineering and technology). information) or recognized as essential public services (health, education, educational childcare services).

Students who hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residence, who study in the targeted programs, and who complete 12 undergraduate credits per session are granted assistance of $2,500 per successful full-time session. Valuable help for students who have to deal with the increasing cost of living and the housing crisis, and also an incentive to invest fully in their studies in order to quickly complete their university career.

A measure that promotes success and rapid completion of studies

At the École de Technologie Supérieure and at Polytechnique Montréal, all bachelor’s degree programs in engineering are covered by these measures. Unlike other establishments, we observe a positive effect in terms of attraction, but also in terms of accelerating graduation.

Before drawing too hasty conclusions which would call into question the effectiveness, or even the existence of the Perspective scholarships, let us give ourselves the time to observe the effects of these measures over a period of at least four years, in order to appreciate their impact on graduation. Let us take the trouble to analyze the results for each discipline, and across all establishments. Let’s also pay attention to other factors that impact registrations, including the recruitment pool, demographic curves and employment conditions.

While it is important to take the time to properly evaluate the effectiveness and scope of Perspective scholarships, and to guarantee the accessibility of our programs, it is no less important to ensure adequate funding for our universities. Attracting and retaining the next generation essential to Quebec’s economic and societal development requires above all increasing the reception capacities of our establishments, the development of innovative programs, and the quality of the training offered. It also involves collective educational work, to guarantee the academic success of young people, while giving them the desire to continue their studies in our colleges and universities.
