Partner Content | Blue Jays vs. Picks and Odds Angels: Alek Manoah should thrive in a low-scoring battle

The Toronto Blue Jays face the Los Angeles Angels this Friday in search of a third consecutive victory for the first time in more than a month.

The pre-game narrative: Both teams will send their youngest starting pitchers to the mound as 22-year-old Chase Silseth takes on 24-year-old Alek Manoah. Silseth has only pitched twice in the majors (both times against the Oakland Athletics), while Manoah has been a staple in Toronto’s rotation through 28 MLB starts.

Here are our picks from Blue Jays vs. Angels for May 27.

Overview of the Blue Jays vs. Angels

  • Fewer than 8 runs (-114)
  • Blue Jays money line (-113)
  • Blue Jays money line, first five innings (-121)

Blue Jays vs. Angels picks

Best bet: Under 8 runs (-114)

A pair of inconsequential ninth-inning runs cost us under in Thursday’s series opener, but we’re getting back into the pot for Game 2.

Manoah has been the Blue Jays’ best run blocker on the mound, posting a 1.62 ERA in 50 innings. That’s third in the majors among qualified pitchers. His 2.98 FIP (17th in MLB) is solid, and his batted ball numbers in Baseball Savant are stellar.

We don’t have the Silseth book yet, but that’s part of the point. No one on the Blue Jays has faced the 2021 11th-round pick before, and that works in Silseth’s favor.

After allowing only five runs in five starts at Double-A, the Angels brought Silseth to the major league club two weeks ago. He had only pitched 31 1/3 innings in the minors prior to his promotion. Sounds familiar? Manoah only had 35 innings under his belt before the Blue Jays called him up last year.

A quick climb up the ladder doesn’t guarantee success, but Silseth has a respectable 2.63 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings so far. When the A’s first saw him, they only managed one hit in six frames.

Toronto, which has a 26th-ranked wRC+ (86) in May, could have similar problems on Friday.

key stat: The under has gone 9-1 in games started by Manoah or Silseth so far this season.

quick picks

ML Tiles (-113): After going 16-4 with Manoah on the mound in 2021, the Blue Jays have a more modest 5-3 record this season. Still, Manoah’s ability to limit opponents to two or fewer earned runs in his eight starts has consistently created an opportunity for his team to win.

Coming off a win and with a strong starter on the mound, this is a fair price for Toronto. For what it’s worth, Toronto won, 10-2, when Manoah started against LA last season.

Blue Jays ML, first five innings (-121): With a little more juice, this allows us to take advantage of Manoah’s performance more accurately. Toronto has been down just once at the five-inning mark in its starts, going 4-1-3 overall.

Toronto has scored the first four runs in its last two games, so maybe it can continue an early scoring trend.
