This Friday, an advisory panel voted to approve to recommend that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approve the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in seniors and people at high risk.
Because it is important?: The fight for a third dose is not new. The pharmaceutical company Pfizer asked the federal agency to approve the booster vaccine. Meanwhile, from the side of the World Health Organization, rich countries were asked to give it up in favor of nations with a lack of vaccines.
- Despite the unanimous approval of the panel, it was clarified that it will not apply to the general public over 16 years of age.
- The next step will be to wait for the FDA’s response to find out whether or not it approves the recommendation.
And now that…?: If the FDA approves the recommendation, it will be the turn of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC for its acronym in English), from where it must meet to decide who would qualify to receive the booster vaccine.
- The event puts a stop to the plan of President Joe Biden, who indicated that he expected to begin applying the third doses as of September 20.
- In addition to Pfizer, Moderna applied to the FDA for approval of the booster vaccine for people 18 years of age and older.
