The conservative leader Erin O’Toole is committed to increasing financial support for grieving parents as the election campaign enters its home stretch.
At a downtown Vancouver hotel on Sunday, Mr. O’Toole said he would extend Employment Insurance benefits to mothers and fathers for up to eight weeks after the death of a child.
He says he would also offer up to eight weeks of paid leave after miscarriage or the delivery of a stillborn child.
Currently, EI parental benefits end immediately after the death of a child and there is no specific bereavement leave for miscarriages or stillbirths under federal labor law. , although women may be entitled to sick leave in the event of complications.
Mr. O’Toole says thousands of Canadian parents suffer the death of a child every year and that a Conservative government would “end the stigma” and give them the time they need to grieve.
At his rallies, Mr O’Toole put forward a “more compassionate conservatism” as he tried to win over parents with a focus on affordability and health care ahead of the 20 elections. September.
