Opinion | Disconnect to connect with you

Ismael Cala, journalist, producer and writer

Technology has been our great ally to make life easier for us, there is no doubt about that. However, it is normal that, faced with the constant use and abuse of any device connected to the internet, we feel so exhausted that our body and mind ask us to stop.

The right to digital disconnection is law in different countries. For example, in Spain an investigation by InfoJobs dating from 2017, showed at that time that only 28% of companies responded to digital disconnection policies, while 51% of workers acknowledged that they answered emails and answered work calls both on holidays and on weekends.

Although the responsibilities of the different jobs may require greater availability for some than for others, it is necessary that we know how to put limits between our private lives and our jobs, because in between these two lies our mental health.

In fact, in countries such as Ireland, the possibility of a code of the right to rest is already being handled, in which three important points are touched: the right not to work daily at non-regular hours, not penalizing for it and respect between employees towards their colleagues to disconnect.

This last point caught my attention, since it is the recognition of that need to take care of each other, because although companies are responsible for providing adequate time management to their collaborators, individual responsibility plays an important role in the fulfillment of this right.

When we are responsible for ourselves, but also for those around us, we generate a major cultural change, which seems like a blessing in times where everyone’s mental health hangs in the balance due to burnout.

The invitation is for us to be responsible to ourselves, since the apps we use at work, as well as our personal networks, are so burning. Otherwise, what are we really doing? The fire is not extinguished by adding more gasoline to the candle.

So, when resting, disconnect to connect with yourself, and thus you will enjoy those activities in which you do not need any type of technology, and instead; They bring you closer to your loved ones and generate great joy for you.
