Ontario Still in Fourth Wave of COVID-19, Likely to Continue Through Winter: Top Doctor | The Canadian News

TORONTO – Ontario’s top physician says the province’s rising COVID-19 infection curve is a continuation of the fourth wave that began in early September, and not the beginning of a fifth wave.

Medical Director of Health Dr. Kieran Moore says case counts never returned to a low level despite a slight drop before steadily rising again in late October.

He says higher case counts were anticipated as people moved indoors in cold weather and says the trend will likely continue into January and February.

He says people should stay vigilant for the next several months until the weather warms up in the spring, allowing for more outdoor gatherings and more people becoming eligible for the third dose of the vaccine.

Ontario reported 748 new COVID-19 cases and five more virus-related deaths on Thursday, as the seven-day average of infections rose to 692.

Some health units in the north and southwest of the province are struggling with the increase in local cases and Moore says the province is working to send resources to help.
