Ontario Reports Fewer than 400 New COVID-19 Cases for Third Time in One Week

Ontario reported 373 new COVID-19 cases and two additional deaths on Monday, as the moving average of new cases hits a low of more than two months.

The province has reported fewer than 500 new cases for eight consecutive days and it is the third time in that stretch that there have been fewer than 400 cases.

Of the new infections, 214 are in people who are not vaccinated, 17 in people who are partially vaccinated, and 34 in people with unknown vaccination status.

The seven-day moving average of cases dropped to 416, reaching the lowest point since Aug. 13.

20,432 tests were completed in the last 24-hour period for a test positivity rate of 1.8 percent.

There are now 168 people in the ICU due to complications from COVID-19 and 97 of them are on ventilators.

The province administered another 12,399 doses of vaccine. Currently, the 87.5 percent of Ontario residents age 12 and older who have received at least one dose, 83.2 percent are now fully vaccinated.

All Ontarians vaccinated against COVID-19 can now download your improved COVID-19 vaccine certificate from the provincial portal. The improved system officially goes into effect on Friday, but companies can now start using the new app to verify QR codes.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says that since the improved vaccine certificate was released on Friday, more than 2.2 million Ontarians have downloaded its copy.

The launch of the new app comes amid speculation Ontario will soon announce a plan to go beyond the current reopening framework of the province, including the end of capacity limits in places like restaurants and gyms where proof of vaccination is required.

A government source told CityNews that an announcement will be made later this week regarding the lifting of restrictions on capacity limits. The source said the capacity change would not be immediate at the time of the announcement.
