Ontario Reports 81 New COVID Cases in Schools and 501 Schools with Confirmed Cases

Ontario reports another 642 COVID-19 cases and five more deaths, according to your latest report released Thursday morning.

Ontario has administered 15,962 vaccine dose since its last daily update, with 22,668,228 vaccinations administered in total at 8 pm the night before.

According to Star’s vaccine tracker, 11,550,229 people in Ontario have received at least one injection. That works out to roughly 88.6 percent of the eligible population ages 12 and older, and the equivalent of 77.7 percent of the total population, including those who are not yet eligible for the vaccine.

The province says 11,117,999 people have completed their vaccinations, meaning they have received both doses. That is roughly 85.3 percent of the eligible population ages 12 and older, and the equivalent of 74.8 percent of the total population, including those who are not yet eligible for the vaccine.

The province now includes data that reflects hospitalizations and cases by vaccination status. Ontario cautions that the new process may cause discrepancies between other hospitalization numbers that are collected through a different process, and that the data may not match daily COVID-19 case counts.

The province reports that 334 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in unvaccinated people, 18 were partially vaccinated, and 245 cases were fully vaccinated. Again, the province cautions that the data may not match daily COVID case counts because records with a missing or invalid health card number cannot be linked.

The province also includes data on COVID-19 in schools as part of its daily reports.

There are 501 schools with a reported COVID case out of 4,844 schools in the province, or 10.34 percent.

There are 81 new cases reported Thursday for a total of 5,429 school-related COVID cases reported in Ontario.

The province says two schools have closed due to outbreaks or operational considerations. It does not include regional closures in a local public health unit area.

The province says 29,814 tests were completed the day before and a positivity rate of 2.1 percent.

There are currently 251 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the province, including 108 intensive care patients who have tested positive for COVID-19. There are 72 people with fans.

Locally, Ontario reports 74 new cases in Toronto, 62 in the York region, 61 in the Peel region, 39 in Ottawa, 48 in Windsor-Essex, and 22 in the Durham region.

Meanwhile, the province reports that there are no new deaths in long-term care, so the number of residents who have died remains the same at 3,824, in the latest report published by the province.

Ontario reports that there are no new long-term care homes in the outbreak, for a total of two or 0.3 percent of LTC homes in the province.

These data are self-reported by long-term care homes to the Ministry of Long-Term Care. The daily case and death figures may not immediately match the figures published by local public health units due to delays in reporting time.

There are 34 more cases of the Delta variant detected for the first time in India, for a cumulative total of 22,007 cases.
