Ontario Reports 328 New COVID-19 Cases, 4 More Deaths | The Canadian News

Ontario reported 328 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the ninth consecutive day the count is less than 500. The total provincial cases now stands at 595,563.

Of the 328 new cases recorded, the data showed that 177 were unvaccinated, 16 were partially vaccinated, 105 were fully vaccinated, and for 30 people the vaccination status was unknown.

According to Tuesday report, 60 cases were registered in Peel Region, 52 in Toronto, 20 in Ottawa, 19 in Windsor-Essex, 18 in Middlesex-London, 17 in Hamilton, 16 in Lambton Public Health,

All other local public health units reported fewer than 15 new cases in the provincial report.

The death toll in the province has risen to 9,819, as four more deaths were recorded.

Vaccinations, recoveries, tests, 7-day average in Ontario

At 8pm on Monday, 21,310 shots (7,551 for a first injection and 8,343 for a second injection) were administered on the last day.

There are more than 10.8 million people fully immunized with two doses, representing 83.2% of the eligible population (12 years and over). The coverage of the first dose is 87.5%.

Meanwhile, 582,072 Ontario residents were reported to have recovered from COVID-19, which is about 98 percent of known cases. The cases solved increased by 498 compared to the previous day.

Active cases in Ontario now stand at 3,672, down from the day before when it was at 3,846, and is down from October 12 when it was at 4,369. At the peak of the second wave coronavirus surge in January, active cases reached just over 30,000. In the third wave in April, active cases exceeded 43,000.

The seven-day average has now reached 407, which is lower than the previous week when it was 525. A month ago, the seven-day average was around 700.

The government said 20,792 tests were processed in the previous 24 hours. Currently 15,515 tests are being investigated.

The positivity of the test reached 1.5 percent. Last week, the test positivity was 1.9 percent.

Ontario Hospitalizations

Ontario reported 260 people in general hospital wards with COVID-19 (115 more than the day before) with 159 patients in intensive care units (9 fewer) and 130 patients in intensive care units with a ventilator (8 fewer).

At the peak of the third wave, which was the worst wave of hospitalizations, the province saw up to 900 ICU patients with COVID and almost 2,400 in general hospital wards.

Provincial officials announced that they would begin to include the vaccination status of those hospitalized for COVID-19 as part of their daily COVID-19 data reports. They noted that the new dataset will grow and improve over time as more information is collected. There may be a discrepancy due to how and when information from both is collected.

For those in general hospital wards with COVID, 102 were not vaccinated, 10 were partially vaccinated, and 35 were fully vaccinated. For those in ICU, 74 were not vaccinated while 4 were partially vaccinated and 26 were fully vaccinated.

Worrisome variants in Ontario

Officials have listed disaggregated data for the new VOCs (variants of interest) detected so far in the province, consisting of:

“Alpha” VOC B.1.1.7 (first detected in the UK): 146,495 variant cases, unchanged from the previous day. This strain dominated the third wave of Ontario.

“Delta” VOC B.1.617.2 (first detected in India): 19,976 variant cases, 96 more from the previous day. This strain dominates the fourth wave of Ontario.

VOC B.1.351 “Beta” (first detected in South Africa): 1,503 variant cases, unchanged from the previous day.

“Gamma” the P.1 VOC (detected for the first time in Brazil): 5,230 variant cases, which remains unchanged from the previous day.

NOTE: It takes several days for positive COVID-19 tests to be retested to determine the exact variant. Therefore, there may be more variant cases than general cases in the daily reports.
