Ómicron turns the world upside down

Some scientists believe that this mutation could be less aggressive, which would help achieve natural immunity to the bulk of the world’s population, although so far all variants of the coronavirus have been worse than the previous ones.

The appearance of a new strain of SARS-CoV-2 in South Africa called Ómicron by the World Health Organization reignited the foci of the health emergency. Many countries suspended flights to southern Africa.

Just when infections are increasing in Europe as a result of the relaxation of measures by governments and the winter season, the variant appears that seems to indicate that the pandemic is never going to end.

Ómicron appears in a context where Europe, the USA, Israel, Saudi Arabia, among other countries, have high vaccination rates, which meant that in the holiday season, although it would register an increase in infections, no severe symptoms or deaths would develop.

The positive side of the appearance of the new variable is that the real-time monitoring of the virus worked, unlike the variable Delta, Ómicron was identified before it spread around the world. Due to its recent appearance, scientists still do not know if it is more lethal and contagious.

Some scientists believe that this mutation could be less aggressive, which would help achieve natural immunity to the bulk of the world’s population, although so far all variants of the coronavirus have been worse than the previous ones.

In Mexico, Ómicron appears in a concert of green traffic lights, official reports of drops in contagion rates and 65 million people vaccinated.

When asked, will the number of infections increase this season? The answer fits: Last year we hugged each other without a vaccine, imagine what this year will be like.

In a natural way in our country mobility increases on December dates, not for nothing are we experts in the Guadalupe-Reyes marathon, plus what accumulates.

Mexican health authorities do not finish learning the lessons of the previous waves. For our authorities, the closure of borders or the restriction of flights is not an alternative.

Dear reader, this holiday season we are facing the fourth wave and the third variant with the same and useless health strategy of two years ago, which has given us such bad results.

Anyway, it’s time to celebrate Christmas and the New Year, but it’s also time to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. Until next time.
