Omar Montes: “I am not the best example for young people”

Omar montes Last year he was the most listened to Spanish artist on Spotify thanks to hits like ‘Alocao’, with its fusion of flamenco and urban music. But to many, more than his music, his face will sound familiar, after having been Chabelita Pantoja’s boyfriend and having participated in products from the Mediaset factory such as’ Women, men and vice versa ‘,’ Big brother VIP 2018 ‘and’ Survivors 2019 ‘, where he was proclaimed the winner. This Friday, Amazon Prime Video crowns him in ‘The little prince is Omar Montes’, a docuserie in which the next judge of ‘Idol kids’ reviews his life in the humble Madrid neighborhood of Pan Bendito and his artistic take-off, accompanied by those who have been by his side in his meteoric career.

He is 33 years old and has already published his memoir and now premieres a docuserie about his life. Isn’t it going too fast?

What happens is that my years are dog years, one counts for seven. For this reason, although I am young, I have lived many things that can be told and that I would like people to see so that they do not happen to them.

He complains that, in his early days, other established artists such as Alejandro Sanz or David Bisbal did not help him. Do you think that in the Spanish music industry there should be more camaraderie, as happens in Latin America?

In Latin America they help each other. You see that Daddy Yankee brings out a song and after two months you have the ‘remix’ with Ozuna, Farruko and Becki G. And here when you bring up the song, you don’t get the ‘remix’ or Christ. But I’m already changing this. Since last year I have been doing ‘remix’ with artists that are emerging that I like, and that although they did not have many numbers, they are putting themselves in the place where they should be. Because there are a lot of talent and very good people on the street, but if you don’t give them a loudspeaker, they stay there.

Do you think that your participation in Telecinco’s ‘reality shows’ has taken away your credibility as an artist? Because there are people who know him for ‘Survivors’, but not for his music. Does that hurt you?

It doesn’t hurt me because in the end it depends on how people like you. It can harm you if you are a weird guy, but if you are a normal person like them, they can even feel identified, as it has been in my case, and that things go well for you.

In the docuserie you meet with a group of boys to raise awareness about ‘bullying’, which you suffered during your adolescence. Do you want to be an example for young people?

No, I am not the best example for young people either because I have had a complicated life. It is said: You do what I tell you, but don’t do what I do. If you pay attention to what I tell you in the documentary, that’s fine, but if you live my life … I have had to live things that I don’t want another child to experience. Although as for a person who has overcome coming from nowhere and has achieved his dream and has removed his mother from scrubbing stairs, for example, there yes.

He boasts of having achieved success without giving up singing with the people of his neighborhood. Is it what you are most proud of?

What I am most proud of is that we do not go hungry or that we have money to go to the movies. Things that apparently seem silly but that to me, since I didn’t have them, I find them cool. Being number one, in the end, is a consequence of when you do things well, but what gratifies me the most is being able to get to my grandmother’s house and say: come on, let’s all go to the movies. The rest is ephemeral, today you are number one and tomorrow a zero.

“Isabel Pantoja is very happy that she is in ‘Idol kids'”

What is the secret to becoming the most listened to artist?

Don’t look hungry. I have never sought to be the most listened to. As a consequence, I am, but I don’t rent a villa and I invite all the people from the show business so that later they will support me and love me. If I have a party I invite the kids from my neighborhood, who are my friends, we make a song, and if we are number one with it, then happy, and if not, too. Therein lies the key to success, in being you at all times. I have not gone to live in La Moraleja. I’m still in the same house, hanging out with my old friends and I haven’t changed anything, I keep going to concerts with the same people, I have the kids from my neighborhood hired … It’s not like I sing like hell, like that that it is a matter of being yourself and treating people well.

And he has his son and his grandmother, who are his filter to detect if his songs are going to be a hit.

I make the song and play it to my grandmother and my son. When I see that they nod and there is a good ‘vibe’, it is that it is going to be successful. They dance to it and spend days listening to it at home. But if I see that the filter does not pass, it is that it will not hit. Sometimes my son’s filter does pass, but my grandmother’s does not. There I resort to my criteria or I upload a story to Instagram and ask.

Soon we will see him in various projects: as an interviewer in Cuatro, as an advisor in ‘La voz senior’, as a contestant on ‘El reto’ and a jury in ‘Idol kids’, where he takes over from his ex-mother-in-law, Isabel Pantoja, with whom so good crumbs did in ‘Survivors’. Has there been any reaction on your part knowing that I would replace you in the contest?

She has congratulated me and told me that she is very happy and happy for the new project.

Has he given you any advice for dealing with children?

Yes, some advice has given me, but I do not want to reveal many things because it is coming soon and it is better to wait for you to see it. Children are what I like the most in the world, as much as animals.
