Oltra’s resignation and those who never lose, by Emma Riverola

In a context of corruption, unemployment and cuts and evictions, the parties that emerged from 15-M advocated lowering the salaries of politicians and promoting strict ethical codes. Exemplary measures that, although understandable at the time, were still a Trojan horse.

The accusation against Mònica Oltra is made up of lawyers, associations and journalists linked to the extreme right. The hunt for a policy committed to improving the lives of citizens is evident. Attacked -and trapped- by her ethical commitment, Oltra has resigned. Not the first time. The extreme right has found in the judicial and media siege a way to bend the verdict of the polls. Calling into question the salary of political officials or demanding an excess of exemplary character are measures that increase their vulnerability and have a special impact on those who seek to create fairer societies by confronting the power of the elites. Responsibility work (and this is it) it must be well paid and must enjoy special protection. The opposite is to denigrate and devalue the public function. Turning politics into a high-risk profession and a shredder only benefits those who never lose.
