Oil companies in Mexico aspire to energy transition, but maintain oil production goals

Some of the oil operators with the largest presence in Mexico, such as the international one with the most contracts: Shell; together with the partner of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) in what is expected to be the first deepwater development in the Trion field, BHP, and deep-sea explorers, such as Wintershall DEA and Lukoil, agreed that the energy transition to renewable sources is part of their agendas, although in the short and medium term they commit to their developments towards the goal of providing Mexico with fuels produced with oil from its territory, as requested by Pemex in the Mexican Petroleum Congress.

Jorge Jiménez, partner of the global firm Dentons López Velarde, explained to The Economist that Mexico continues to have immense potential in terms of oil exploration and production and that, in his opinion, Pemex It must continue to carry out projects that allow restoring reserves and maintaining a good level of barrels of daily production.

Although the current government completely stopped the rounds to assign new contracts to private operators, to the extent that the development of the projects that are currently in execution of the rounds prior to 2018 continue to mature and Pemex continues with the impossibility of increasing the platform of production in a relevant way; it is to be expected that in a new administration in 2024 the rounds will be resumed and that private operators can continue to play the important role that they can and should perform, ”said Jiménez.

For Barbara Blakely, Director of Corporate Relations for Latin America and the Caribbean of Shell, the transition is an integral commitment with its consumers and investors, but mainly, with society and the planet.

From the perspective of Stephan Drouaud, Trion’s project manager for BHP in Mexico, companies must create social value and contribute to lowering carbon emissions to advance the energy transition.

Support the energy transition with truly meaningful actions. Global and national ambitions are what must connect to combat climate change. We are moving towards cleaner processes ”, he asserted.

Towards 2022, Stephan Drouaud shared that they will prioritize their investment in sustainable infrastructure, more efficient transportation and greener solutions. It should be remembered that BHP It is evaluating the divestment of its oil activities in the world, in order to focus on mining, a strategy to be defined next year, although they have stated that they have no intention of selling their deepwater asset in Mexico.

For their part, Oleg Shurubor, CEO of Lukoil Upstream México, and Martín Jungbluth, CEO of Wintershall DEA, agreed that the key to the energy transition is for all industries to improve their energy efficiency in an orderly and sustained manner to achieve sustainability goals.

Ulises Hernández Romano, CEO of Petróleos Mexicanos International (PMI), which is the commercial arm of the state oil company, stressed that Pemex it is advancing in its refining strategy to reduce dependence on fuel imports, while in the field of exploration and production it is aiming for a goal of 2 million barrels per day at the end of the current administration.

The CEO of SMEs He pointed out that when the production goal of the Mexican oil company approaches, the crude process will reach a level higher than one and a half million barrels per day in the National Refining System.
