Oaxaca Month begins in Washington DC

Washington, DC October 26, 2021.- “Our presence here responds to a strategic agenda of my government: to make Oaxaca a recognizable brand throughout the world, which supports the creations and efforts of thousands of Oaxacans and Oaxacans who they take care of and preserve the greatness of our state so that this translates into a better economy, more jobs and well-being for our people, ”said Governor Alejandro Murat Hinojosa during the inauguration of the“ Month of Oaxaca in the United States ”activities. a space for economic and cultural promotion managed by the Mexican Embassy in the neighboring country to the north in coordination with the State Government.

This initiative promoted by Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma Barragán and Governor Alejandro Murat seeks to open new routes for growth and economic reactivation of the entity, through the dissemination of traditions, natural and cultural wealth of the state that in this framework They represent through the altars of the day of the dead, the calenda, the guelaguetza, gastronomy and art.

“We are very grateful to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and to Ambassador Moctezuma for promoting a work agenda that seeks the development of the south and southeast of Mexico. We Oaxacans are ready to promote the growth of our country with the help of great infrastructure works such as the Interoceanic Corridor and the highways to the Coast and the Isthmus, which will consolidate Oaxaca as a tourist destination of international relevance and as the center most important logistics in the continent ”, highlighted the Governor.

The main venue for these activities is the Mexican Cultural Institute (ICM) in Washington DC, where on this day the traditional altar of the dead was inaugurated, which integrates elements such as the marigold flower, pieces of bread, seasonal fruits, dishes with mole and mezcal, among others.

As part of the inauguration of this event, the calenda was also held, a traditional festive parade characterized by band music, calenda monkeys (giant puppets) and the tasting of mezcal; as well as a sample of the Guelaguetza with the participation of the Maqueos Music Philharmonic Band and the Oaxacan Folkloric Ballet Nueva Antequera, both made up of Oaxacan residents in the state of California.

Ingredients such as cocoa, corn, chili peppers and huitlacoche were the protagonists of the recipes by chefs Celia Florián from Quince Letras restaurant, Alejandro Ruiz from Casa Oaxaca, Rodolfo Castellanos de Origen, José Manuel Baños de Pitiona and Alam Méndez de Maíz 64 , who showed interpretations based on traditional cuisine, its times, processes and techniques; in fusion with contemporary cuisine.

Similarly, Ambassador Moctezuma and Governor Murat inaugurated the exhibition of the renowned contemporary art artist Amador Montes, whose works will be exhibited along with those of the talented Oaxacan creators Bayrol Jiménez and Sabino Guisu at the ICM, and which are exhibited of the artistic avant-garde that is brewing in Oaxaca with international projection.

“We are very proud and excited that Oaxaca has come to the United States to conquer its audience through its culture, traditions and the warmth of its people, colors and flavors. We are sure that with this type of program, such as the one we promote from the Embassy, ​​we will be able to better position Mexico in the minds and hearts of Americans, in addition to opening opportunities to strengthen investment, tourism and academic exchange that pay to the good understanding between our nations ”, expressed Ambassador Moctezuma at the end of the press conference in which the program was announced.

At a press conference held in the ICM’s Music Room in front of the US and international media, the Governor and the Ambassador signed a framework agreement to implement a co-investment strategy with Oaxacan migrant groups or clubs with the aim of carrying out works of social infrastructure in rural areas of Oaxaca.

It is worth mentioning that during the “Month of Oaxaca in the United States” meetings will also be held with American businessmen, business associations and research centers (think tanks), such as the Atlantic Council and the US Chamber of Commerce, in order to promote strategies that promote and facilitate investment to encourage economic growth.

Similarly, key sectors of the Oaxacan industry, such as mezcalero and coffee growers, will be promoted through meetings with relevant actors and entrepreneurs interested in exploring these markets.

Of special relevance will be the presentation of the “Family Guelaguetza” program that will allow the reunification of migrants with their parents or grandparents after not having seen each other for at least 20 years.

Other outstanding cultural activities are the exhibition “Made in Oaxaca”, open to the public until November 20, in which the State Government presents an important variety of high quality and export Oaxacan products; as well as culinary experiences from the state of Oaxaca on selected days.

The splendor of the entity will also be shown through a program of talks that will take place from October 28 to November 4, at 6:00 p.m., on topics such as the Made in Oaxaca certification, mezcal and state agaves, coffee Pluma, gastronomy of the Central Valleys and Geographical Indications of the entity, through which bridges of understanding will be built to facilitate investments and attract the attention of US tourism.
