Purdue University professor of women’s, gender and sexuality studies Cheryl Cooky is being roundly lambasted on social media after she compared transgender University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas to trailblazing baseball star Jackie Robinson.

Robinson — under a torrent of abuse — broke baseball’s color line in 1947 for the Brooklyn Dodgers, forever integrating the MLB.

Now, Cooky has written an opinion piece for NBC claiming the controversial Thomas, 22, is on par with Robinson.

Cooky wrote: “Thomas, as the first transgender athlete to win a Division I NCAA championship, deserves to be placed among the other firsts. She should be embraced in the history of progress that sports represent and recognized as the trailblazer that she is.”

And far from harming women’s sports, the loopy lecturer claims Thomas has opened up new doors for female athletes.

We apologize, but this video has failed to load.

“For anyone who cares about the advancement of sports, and women’s sports in particular, her win should be celebrated,” Cooky wrote.

Thomas was a mediocre swimmer on the men’s team before transitioning and demolishing her female competition. She became the first transgender athlete to win a Division I NCAA championship last week after placing first in the women’s 500-yard race.

But the backlash against the woke scholar was fast and furious.

Author Abigail Shrier tweeted: “First, they steal opportunities from women. Then, they tell us we ‘should be celebrating’ this as a victory for women.”

Another Twitter user named Tony Scampanelli opined: “This isn’t an advancement of women’s sports or sports at all. It’s the advancement of uncommon sense and obsession with some moral superiority based on ‘progressive’ values.”

In January, one of Thomas’ teammates told the Washington Examiner that the swimmer herself referenced the Baseball Hall of Famer.

“She compares herself to Jackie Robinson,” the terrified teammate, who spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of being labeled transphobic, said. “[Lia] said she is like the Jackie Robinson of trans sports.”

Thomas has denied comparing herself to the beloved Dodgers star.

Following his early death in 1972, Robinson was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
