NS Landlord Charged With Extortion After Allegedly Threatening Tenants – Halifax | The Canadian News

The Richmond County Mounted Police say they have charged a 56-year-old man with racketeering.

In a statement, police say they began investigations into Frank Eckhardt on December 1, after receiving a report of two people extorted by the owner.

Police say the victims were immigrants from Germany and had received assistance from Eckhardt, to whom they would later rent a commercial space.

“When the victims explored options to properly break their lease, the man demanded money or property from the victims or would ensure that the temporary work visas were revoked, resulting in their deportation,” the statement said.

Eckhardt was arrested Monday without incident.

Police say he has been released under conditions and the investigation is ongoing.

Eckhardt is scheduled to appear in Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court on February 28.
