The 20-year-old Maier, who is the No. 80 overall prospect for the draft according to MLB Pipeline and the No. 39 best college prospect for it according to Baseball America, left his March 4 appearance against UC Santa Barbara in the sixth inning after getting his forearm checked out by the team trainer.

He missed last Friday’s scheduled start against Stanford University and earlier this week Oregon confirmed that Maier would also sit out this coming Friday’s game against Utah.

Teams generally throw their best pitcher on Fridays.

Oregon pitching coach Jake Angier told reporters there: “We’re still in the figuring-out stage. He’s got some meetings that he has to take care of, and then we’ll know more soon.”

An Oregon spokesman, via email, reported Thursday merely that Maier wouldn’t be pitching this weekend.

Maier is a former standout with the North Shore Twins who transferred to Oregon this season from the UBC Thunderbirds.

UBC didn’t play last season due to COVID-19, but Maier had a breakthrough summer in the collegiate all-star Cape Cod League, the premier loop of its kind. That included striking out 27 in 25 2/3 innings.
