Niagara Regional Police to Implement Member Vaccination Policy – Hamilton | The Canadian News

The Niagara Regional Police (NRPS) is using a recent surge in COVID-19 cases across the province and the emergence of new variants of concern as rationale for implementing a vaccination policy for members.

In a statement Monday afternoon, the service said members will need to provide proof of vaccination by Dec. 17.

“A vaccination policy will ensure the continued health and safety of our members, along with the community we serve,” Acting Chief Brett Flynn said in a statement.

“This policy is a piece of the puzzle to reassure our members as well as the public.”

The policy will make arrangements for those who cannot be vaccinated due to “protected terrain” under the Ontario Human Rights Code.

Members who are not fully vaccinated by January 4, or who choose not to receive a COVID vaccine, will be subject to regular rapid antigen testing, according to Flynn.

Staff who choose not to be vaccinated or screened will be placed on non-disciplinary leave without pay.

The NRPS revealed that it was mulling over a possible vaccination policy in late October during a police services board meeting.

In sp. Rob LaPlante informed regional staff that the service had initiated discussions about its possible implementation with the Niagara Region Police Association.
