COVID-19 illnesses and supply chain shortages have delayed the opening of the new Catholic Central High School until at least Thanksgiving.

“Our initial hope was for a September opening, however we are optimistic that a gradual move may occur over the Thanksgiving weekend with occupancy on October 11,” the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board wrote in a letter to students and families last week. “If all goes according to plan, we can begin moving essential items that weekend, with other non-essential items being moved over on a gradual basis.

The new two-storey building, on 11 acres of property at 2465 McDougall Ave., was supposed to be ready for the start of school in September.

But the school board said Oscar Construction Company Limited, which is building the $30 million facility, has faced “challenges outside their control.”

Those challenges have included staff shortages due to COVID-19 illnesses and delays in shipping of essential supplies such as steel and HVAC parts.

“As previously indicated, we still anticipate moving into the new school for the 2022-23 school year, however we are now planning for classes in September to be held in the current building on Tecumseh Road until the new school on McDougall Avenue is ready for occupancy,” the school board said.

“As we are all aware, the COVID-19 pandemic has created a lasting impact on global supply chains which has made completing construction projects extremely challenging.”

When it is finished, the new school will have room from 900 students from Grades 9 to 12. The modern new facility will have separate wings for technology, science, business, arts and athletics. There will also be a double gym and playing field.

“Please know that we remain committed to providing the best possible learning environments for the staff and students of Catholic Central High School,” the school board said. “This new timeline will help to ensure that the occupants of this incredible new building will be able to fully enjoy their new school.”
