Murders and Covid, leading causes of death in productive age

In 2020, a total of one million 86,743 deaths were registered, of which were due to different reasons, such as diseases and health-related problems (92.4%) as well as external causes, mainly accidents, homicides and suicides (7.6%).

According to the document entitled “Characteristics of deaths registered in Mexico during 2020”, prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), it was detailed that the deaths documented this year exceed the figure of 2019 by 338,959 cases when it was registered a total of 747,784 deaths.

With respect to the death rate registered per 10,000 inhabitants for this 2020, it was located at 86, that is, 27 points more than that corresponding to 2019 (59).

“The increase in registered deaths coincides with the beginning of the period of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Inegi.

The entity with the highest rate was CDMX with 143, followed by Chihuahua with 103 and Sonora with 96 units. At the other extreme, Quintana Roo had the lowest rate with 58, Baja California Sur registered 61 and Querétaro with 65.

Results in detail

The report revealed that among the productive population (15 to 64 years old), the main causes of death were homicides (15 to 34 years old) and Covid-19 (35 to 64).

While the three main causes among the population of all ages were heart disease, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and diabetes mellitus.

In the case of the first, a total of 218,704 were registered; Inegi detailed that there are 62,663 more cases than in 2019.

In the section on deaths from Covid, a total of 200,256 deaths were stipulated, of which 128,793 correspond to men, that is, 64.6% and 71,458 to women with a percentage of 35.6.

“Deaths that occur due to diabetes mellitus are in third place (…) there were 151,019 cases in total, 46,665 more than in 2019,” the document reads.

In the case of homicide, which was the eighth cause of death in general, a total of 36,773 cases were registered in our country in 2020, 112 more than the data for 2019 when 36,661 were documented.

Excess mortality

According to information from Inegi and based on the years 2015 to 2019, a total of 749,496 deaths were expected by 2020, although more than a million occurred. This means that there was an excess of mortality, from all causes, of 326,921, equivalent to 43.6 percent.

In heart disease, 156,029 deaths were expected and 216,385 deaths occurred, an excess of 60,356 cases. In diabetes they were 39,406 (35.7%) and pneumonia and influenza, 26,622 (85.7 percent).

Suicides on the rise in the country

Suicide, which is classified as a public health problem worldwide according to the United Nations (UN), in our country had an increase in 2020, in the context of the Covid pandemic, figures from the Institute revealed. National Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

Last year, a total of 7,896 cases were recorded, a figure higher than that registered in 2019 when a total of 7,223 were documented. Of the total for 2020, 1,436 (18.2%) correspond to women and 6,452 (81.7%) to men. In eight cases the sex was not specified.

Regarding the death rate registered by this act, by state of habitual residence per 100,000 inhabitants in the referred period is 6.2 units, which is above the 5.7 documented last year.

The states with the highest rates were Chihuahua (14.4); Aguascalientes (12.6) and Yucatán (10.4). In contrast, with the lowest rates were Guerrero (1.3); Baja California (2.6) and Veracruz (3.6). (Iván Rodríguez)
