Essex MP Chris Lewis spoke on Tuesday about concerns with Canada’s employment insurance program that he said are of particular concern to auto workers in southwestern Ontario.

Speaking in the House, the Essex MP said EI was a “crisis in the making” for auto workers and food plant workers who have been laid off for weeks this year amid the global microchip shortage.

“Mr. Spokesperson, some workers in our region have only worked nine weeks this year,” Lewis said. “Faced with an anxious Christmas and an uncertain future, they need a compassionate and swift response from your government.”

She also noted that more than 850 laid-off Unifor Local 444 casino workers have exhausted their EI benefits this year, and spoke about mothers taking EI in lieu of maternity leave.
