More than 10,000 Afghan refugees welcomed to Canada

The arrival of 300 new Afghan refugees Wednesday at Toronto airport marked the welcoming of more than 10,000 Afghans to Canada since August 2021, a milestone highlighted by Ottawa when others called for expedited immigration applications.

“Despite the extraordinary and complex challenges we face on the ground in Afghanistan, the pace of arrivals remains high and we will continue to work with our trusted national and international partners as we resettle more Afghan refugees safely in Afghanistan. Canada,” said Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, who was present for the arrival of the chartered plane.

On the same day, New Democratic Party (NDP) Critic for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Jenny Kwan, called on the Minister to expedite the processing of immigration applications for these refugees.

Accompanied by Afghan interpreters, the MP for Vancouver East said their families face significant threats and demanded action from the Trudeau government.

The Liberals announced last November that extended family members of performers could be eligible to come to Canada through an expedited process.

Of the approximately 300 people who have used the procedure since Dec. 9, no extended family members have arrived in Canada, interpreters said Wednesday, according to CTV News.
