Monster heads and memorabilia for sale as Vancouver’s ‘nerd bar’ closes for good | The Canadian News

Sunday’s final call will feature the serving of bowls of beer, glasses of Klingon blood wine and pan-galactic garrison blasters at Vancouver nerd bar the Storm Crow Alehouse.

The Vancouver-founded chain closed its original location on Commercial Drive in 2020 and also calls it at its West Broadway location. That leaves the last Storm Crow in Toronto.

A combination of factors, including labor and supply shortages, rising rents and construction on the Broadway subway, made it too difficult to keep the doors open.

“The goal has always been to create an environment where just like a sports fan feels happy and comfortable at a sports bar, where someone who is really nerdy can look around and like, ‘I understood that reference’, so they can feel like the things they love are all around them, ”said Storm Crow marketing officer Jessica Langer.

Focus on nerd culture equipment is now bearing fruit for laid-off staff. The company is auction his large stock of memorabilia, with all proceeds going to the workers.

But Langer said there are still some big ticket items available, such as a life-size Tardis, the British police box that Dr. Who used to travel through space and time, with a starting bid of $ 5,000.

The most expensive item, a cut-off and wall-mounted replica rancor head, is waiting for a deep pocket Star Wars fan.

“It’s the child of the monster in which Luke fought Return of the Jedi at Jabba’s palace, ”Langer said of the $ 25,000 item.

“It is quite realistic. When you look, the teeth all shine beautifully. It’s kind of in the old hunting lodge mode, but rather a big giant space monster. ”

Langer said there are no plans to open another Storm Crow in the city any time soon, but they do not rule out coming back with another concept some time later.

Last call at the beer house is Sunday 22:00.
