Today’s best MLB prop bets

Cheaper down the Hudson

We’ve been cashing in on the starting pitcher’s strikeout fixtures lately against the Cincinnati Reds, but today might be a good day to deviate from that successful strategy. Enter Dakota Hudson of St. Louis.

Hudson has started just 11 games since 2020 and hasn’t come out of the gates in his best shape to start 2022. He’s allowed eight hits and seven runs in his seven innings of work (two starts), allowed two home runs and is shooting just 54% of his pitches for strikes. He loaded the bases in the first inning of his last start and struck out just two of the 18 batters he faced.

Hudson’s peripherals aren’t great either, especially when looking at his strikeout accessories. He ranks in the bottom third percentile for chase percentage and bottom third for wOBA, K rate, fastball spin (and speed), barrel percentage and hard hitting percentage. There’s just not much to like here from a 3.5-plus strikeout perspective, even with a good matchup.

Hudson probably won’t throw more than 80 pitches and shouldn’t see the order a third time. Throughout his career, he is a 6.6 K/9 pitcher and is struggling with placement to start the season. St. Louis’ bullpen is rested and could spring into action if Hudson struggles again. The stadium factor isn’t in Hudson’s favor either, as double-digit winds are blowing into left field today.

Choose: Dakota Hudson Under 3.5 strikeouts (+100 in FanDuel)

noah club

Noah Syndergaard has been looking great since getting his health back. He faced the Astros and Rangers to open the season and allowed just seven hits (two walks) and two runs in 11 1-3 innings. He’s pitching for the third time in the order and threw 82 pitches in his last outing, so 90 is a possibility today against a weak Baltimore lineup.

The Orioles strike out at 27%, which is the highest mark in the American League. They’re also arguably the worst offensive lineup in baseball right now with 30th ISO, 28th wOBA and 25th batting average. Thor built on his first start and should be even stronger in his third start against a Baltimore lineup that has scored two or fewer runs in six of his last nine games.

While his average plumb line speed is 94.6 mph, no batter has yet recorded a hit against him with 45 sinkers thrown. Syndergaard is mixing his stuff up well with his changeup, sinker, 4-seam and slider all getting at least 15% on his pitches and while he only has five strikeouts those numbers will improve as his chase rate and hit rate smell are all in the top third percentile in the league. He has a very respectable 29% CSW percentage and should be able to drop some bats today while flirting with 18 total outs on record.

Syndergaard and the Angles are heavy favorites and the books expect the Angels starter to go at least five innings and his support to “record a win” to be a hefty -250. The Orioles haven’t seen a high-profile pitching parade in recent memory, and Thor seems to be getting better with every start. The weather conditions will also play in your favor. We’re also keeping an eye on his total outs pillar and will pounce on the Over with 15.5 outs or less.

Choose: Noah Syndergaard Over 5.5 strikeouts (-135 in FanDuel)

jazz hands

Miami’s Jazz Chisholm has found his way to the top of the Miami order thanks in part to a 1.014 OPS that should give the speed and power hitter a few more at-bats in the future. He went hitless last night when his team was shut out 3-0, but the Jazz haven’t been hitless in consecutive games this season.

The youngster has 24 total bases in 34 at-bats and seven of his nine total hits have gone to extra bases, including a pair of bombs and two triples. This kid can fly and with his total base support at 0.5 (-130 above), we’re only asking for a single bag.

Chisholm will also see a familiar opponent on the mound when he takes on Atlanta’s Ian Anderson, against whom he is 3-for-10 in his career. Anderson is dealing with some command issues and a spin speed on his fastball that is among the worst in the league.

Anderson hasn’t allowed many hits earlier in the season, but Chisholm got to see five at-bats and has been swatting the ball lately. His speed is also a huge advantage for just getting a base, as he ranks 5th in baseball in running speed.

A promotion to the top of the order is a huge boost for Chisholm, and there’s some value in his 0.5+ total bases at -130 for a guy who could see five at-bats and has the skill set he possesses.

Choose: Jazz Chisholm Jr. Over 0.5 total bases (-130 at Caesars)
