Mireia Belmonte seeks coach for Paris 2024

Mireia Belmonte, the best Spanish swimmer in history, said this Tuesday in Murcia that her goal is to Paris 2024 Olympic Games, to which she is “sure” that she will arrive “in the best possible way”, although today she does not have a coach and is looking for him after breaking her bond with the French Fred Vergnoux.

The athlete from Badalona has participated in the university welcome events at the San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM), where she is studying.

Mireia Belmonte, who will turn 31 on November 10, has been for the last few years with Vergnoux, whose signing for the club Metropole Canary changes plans to the one who has been his ward since 2010, first in the CN Sabadell and since 2013 in the Sant Cugat High Performance Center, within the group of swimmers awarded by the Federation.

“It is a slightly strange moment, because I do not know who will train me and for now I am on a self-taught plan so as not to lose much form as a job prior to when I start doing it more exhaustively with a coach,” commented who will continue to belong to the club UCAM Fuensanta, of Murcia.

The Olympic, world and European champion did not perform at her best last summer in the Tokyo Games and the physical discomfort in the shoulders with which he arrived took their toll. The swimmer, who was fourth in the 400-meter styles test as the best result, has already recovered thanks to the rest and “the pain went down a lot”, she indicated.

“I have never lacked courage or strength, because in that I am always at the top and there is no problem,” he declared. “I have to listen to my body and see how it reacts. From there, I will make my decisions,” he added.

Emotional moment

He has taken advantage of his stay in Murcia to give a pleasant surprise to María, a girl who suffers from a rare disease and who practices swimming inspired by her favorite athlete, winner of four Olympic medals and 16 in world championships.

María, a native of Elche (Alicante) and with type I mucopolysaccharidosis, for which she needs a special treatment to alleviate the absence of a precise enzyme to break down molecules, she had the illusion of meeting Mireia and she did so in the Los Jerónimos monastery , UCAM headquarters in the district of Guadalupe de Maciascoque.

The little girl, who has been swimming since she was one year old and trains five days a week, has been accompanied by her parents and her sister at the time of seeing her idol, with whom she has shared a while.

“It has been very emotional. It is always nice to see that a girl has a reference in you and in this case she is a swimmer and trains every day paying attention to me and that is a pride that gives me a lot of encouragement and a lot of strength to keep going”, Belmonte has stated.

“I have done some tutoring. The important thing is not to let it go and to take the subjects little by little. You have to have the same constancy that I have with sports and know that tomorrow, when I stop swimming, I will have an academic base “, has explained
