Mi’kmaq recognized as first language of Nova Scotia

A new bill recognizing Mi’kmaq as Nova Scotia’s first language was introduced Thursday and will help preserve and promote this language for future generations.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission tries to mend the broken pots with the First Nations. It is in this spirit that the Minister of L’nu Affairs introduced the Mi’kmaq Language Act.

“The work we will continue to do together in the months to come will create a blueprint moving forward. Our government considers this a crucial step on the road to reconciliation,” said L’nu Affairs Minister Karla MacFarlane.

With the Mi’kmaq Language Act, the province will work with Mi’kmaq communities and various organizations, such as Mi’kmaq Kina’matnewey, to develop a language revitalization strategy

“It’s an important first step, but there’s still a lot of work to do. I look forward to working with our Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Language Warriors and the Province in the joint implementation of this legislation. I hope the model we are creating can be used nationally,” said Mi’kmaq Kina’matnewey President, Chief Leroy Denny of the Eskasoni Community.

The new law is expected to come into force on October 1, Treaty Day.
