Mexico registers 927 new deaths, the highest number of the fourth wave

The Ministry of Health notified this Thursday 927 new deaths due to Covid-19the highest number of deaths recorded so far under the fourth wave facing Mexicoto add 311,554 deaths since the pandemic began in the country.

The last time that the health authorities had reported around 900 daily deaths, was on September 15, 2021, when 897 deaths were registered. Meanwhile, during this fourth rebound, the previous number of deaths considered the highest was 829, which was registered on February 1.

According to the daily technical report on the progress of the epidemic, the accumulated infections of the new coronavirus increased to 5 million 226,269, after they were registered 34,261 confirmed cases in the last 24 hours.

The federal agency also detailed that 127,688 active cases are estimated, that is, people who filed signs and symptoms of covid-19 in the last 14 days and therefore can transmit the disease.

Regarding hospital capacity, the general bed occupancy it stands at 36%, one percentage point less than what was reported on Wednesday; while the fan beds they have 25 percent occupancy.

Advance of vaccination against Covid-19 in Mexico

The federal government highlighted that at the cutoff of Wednesday, February 9, 500,077 vaccines against Covid-19 were applied, for which the total number of doses supplied nationwide amounted to 170,713,604 million.

Of the 83 million 967,069 people immunized, 77 million 705,833 have a complete schedule.

It should be remembered that last Wednesday, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) observed a trend regarding the behavior of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic in the countries of the Americas: “some nations with higher vaccination coverage are registering fewer admissions and deaths in intensive care units”, for which they emphasized the importance of expanding access to vaccines, including booster doses.

Despite these advances, the regional office of the World Health Organization (who) remains cautious in the face of uncertainty, after the increase in infections registered worldwide at the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, mainly attributed to Ómicron, characterized by being more contagious than the rest of the Covid-19 variants detected.

“The main characteristic of this pandemic remains the uncertainty of its evolution. And this requires some caution. New variants of concern may emerge and completely change the epidemiological profile of Covid-19,” warned Carissa Etienne, director of the PAHO.
