Mexico recovers the jobs lost by the pandemic; there is less casual work

The recovery of formal employment indexes totaled 172,668 jobs in October, reported the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). However, the eventual work is still lagging.

The month of October reached 20 million 767,587 jobs, more than the 20 million 613.5 thousand workers reported in February 2020, prior to the health emergency due to Covid-19.

“As of October 2021, there is the historical affiliation of more than 18 million permanent workers. It is the first time in history that for the fourth consecutive month there has been the creation of more than 100,000 permanent positions ”, informed the IMSS.

In this regard, Héctor Márquez, president of the Mexican Association of Human Capital Companies (AMECH) said that it is historical for Mexico that by this time of year they have created close to a million jobs; November is also a month of job creation that provides a boost to the commerce sector and casualties in the countryside, so the projections remain positive “, he declared.

He added that we still have to wait for the negative numbers that year after year the month of December throws, which are around 200 or 300,000 fewer jobs, the recovery may be an objective reached.

It should be noted that the forecast of Bank of Mexico by the end of the year it is 654,000 jobs.

For now, this real recovery leaves red flags for eventual jobs. Temporary employment opportunities in the month of July reported a historical loss of 228,891 temporary jobs. For August only 2,904 opportunities of this type were created, in September another 47,076, and in October only 60,532; only 110,512 temporary jobs recovered.

According to the general director of the IMSS, Zoé RobledoThis phenomenon is due to the subcontracting reform, in which 2.9 million female workers hired directly by an employer have already been registered.

Of the 993,855 jobs reported in the IMSS until October, 1 million 43,675 were permanent positions but 49,820 temporary positions were lost.

To the extent that these jobs cannot be recovered within formality, the possibility of temporary workers moving towards informality is fueled. In the medium term, this phenomenon could permeate the creation of formal post-pandemic jobs, ”explained the manager.

It should be remembered that in the Commerce Sector -from September until January- it generates a high demand for temporary workers driven by the production peaks of the celebrations that take place in these months.

The economic sectors with the highest annual percentage growth in jobs are transportation and communications with 10.4%, extractive with 8.2% and construction with 6.6%. By state, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Baja California Sur stand out with annual increases of over 12 percent.
