Mexico launches working group with the United States for the electrification of transport

As part of accelerating the transition to electromobilitythe Mexican government launched the United States-Mexico working group for transportation electrification.

In alliance with the University of California, a binational route for decision-making has been designed.

Foreign Secretary, Marcelo Ebrardstressed that the decision was made in the North American Leaders Summitheld in November 2021.

“What we are experiencing today is proposing to change mobility to electromobility in a very short time. Now where does that come from? Well, an agreement at the Summit of North American Leaders”, highlighted Ebrard, at the launch event held at the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry.

“It is obvious that we have, for example, to worry about batteries, what are the substantive elements for batteries? So the cells. And what are the main minerals? Lithium, cobalt. Do we have a common policy on that? Well, we’re going to have it, we’d better because if not, it’s not going to work,” said the official.

The initiative includes intersectoral and triple helix work in five thematic axes: innovation; human capital; provider development; infrastructure development and governance structure.

In a video message, David Turkdeputy secretary of american energyemphasized that both the United States and Mexico can become world leaders in the electric vehicle market and listed that the production of batteries must be increased, as well as making them cheaper, more efficient and less wasteful.

“We are pleased to work with the government of Mexico to advance its climate goals and grow a competitive and diversified clean energy economy,” said Turk, recalling that they also agreed to collaborate to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy throughout North America. , including technical assistance, exchange of practices, and efforts to catalyze financing and technology.

Luz Elena del Castillo, president and CEO of Ford Mexicoreported that in 2021 in the country they only sold around 1,400 electric units and that there are barely 300 charging stations and 600 connections.

“It seems very important to us for the adoption of electric vehicles in the Mexican market to also have a clear route of what the charging infrastructure is going to be like, who is going to lead it, how we can all unite in this purpose so that adoption is faster. , with a legal framework that accompanies this entire adoption process,” he said.
