Mexico and the United States launch their security cooperation “among equals”

Mexico and the United States on Monday presented their joint security action plan in the framework of a “new relationship between equals”, according to Mexico, whose president recently referred to the presence of fbi agents on its territory.

In the light of drug, arms and migrant trade, the two neighboring countries will launch “101 actions” to “prevent cross-border crimes and prosecute criminal networks,” the Mexican foreign minister summed up. Marcelo Ebrardduring a press release with US Ambassador Ken Salazar.

This action plan is part of the new “Two Hundred Years Agreement” announced in early October during the visit of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Friday questioned the presence of FBI agents investigating the murder of two Canadians last week in Cancún, a tourist hotspot in the Gulf of Mexico.

“We ask the US ambassador to inform us … We are not opposed to working in a coordinated way against crime, but we can not allow our sovereignty to be violated,” the president told reporters.

“As is the case with the criminal investigations of the government of Quintana Roo (the Mexican state where Cancun is located), any involvement of US federal agencies (…) in Mexico in a transparent manner and in strict consultation with the Mexican authorities. ” Ambassador Salazar said Sunday.

Just a year ago, Mexico passed a new national security law aimed at “guaranteeing the country’s sovereignty” and “regulating the actions of foreign agents.”

The law is primarily targeting agents of the FBI, the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) and the DEA, the US anti-drug agency, active in Mexican territory.
