Mexico, about to become the second data center hub in Latin America: Panduit

The placing of data centers in Mexico will grow 20% through 2022, the largest increase in this segment in the world, according to Jeff Paliga, director of Business Development at Panduitprovider of data center infrastructure, such as server cabinets (racks), connectors and fiber optic cables.

During the first day of the GSIC 2022 congress in Panduit in Mexico, Paliga said in an interview that although Brazil has always been the growth leader for data centers in the region, Mexico has become a very attractive market for the development of this type of facility in the region, with the investments of hyperscalers What amazon and Googleand from local businesses, such as KIO.

Mexico is about to become the second most relevant country in terms of data centers in Latin America. For Panduit, half of the data center business in Latin America is in Mexico,” Paliga said.

In accordance with Data Center Mapa platform that locates the number of data centers in each country, while Brazil has 70 data centers in its territory, Argentina and Chile have 15 of these facilities and Mexico has 14.

Electrical reform will not affect investment

The market analysis consultancy Aritzon estimates that the data center market in Mexico will receive investments of 905 million dollars between 2022 and 2026, with an average annual growth of 8.33 percent. Besides, the International Association of Computer Room Experts (ICREA) recently announced that there are at least five data center megaprojects to be developed in the next two years in Mexico, with an investment of 300 million dollars.

Holly Garcia, Vice President of Data Centers at Panduitsaid to The Economist that the tensions between Mexico and the United States due to the electrical reform proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will not affect Panduit’s investment and growth plans in Mexico.

In this sense, according to a recent BNamericas report, Mexico’s attractiveness in terms of data centers is not only driven by the demand for cloud and streaming services, but also by the guarantee of electricity supply, the protection law of data, the growing markets for video games and OTT platforms, as well as plans to implement 5G infrastructure.

Density and containment, trends

According to Holly Garcia, the trend has long been for data centers to move out of urban concentrations and into suburbs where they can have more stable access to power and water supplies used by cooling systems. of these facilities.

However, other trends seen by Panduit around the data center sector are the increase in density, that is, making data centers in increasingly concentrated spaces; as well as containment, that is, the ability to reduce the temperature of computer equipment through passive infrastructure.

“Mexico is in a very good position because there is a lot of new construction, new infrastructure, while in other countries they have to deal with legacy technologies. We are starting from scratch and having that flexibility gives you the opportunity to grow data center placement and bandwidth,” Paliga said.
