Mexico, a partner for the European Union in green transition: Ambassador Mignot


Mexico is an essential partner for the European Union with which several cooperation issues can be addressed, such as dealing with climate change, said Gautier Mignot, ambassador of the European Union In our country.

The diplomat assured that despite the importance of the energy issue, particularly the debate on the energetic reformthis does not exhaust the debates on the fight against climate change and other issues on the agenda and reiterated that pronouncements such as attacks on journalists and human rights defenders should not influence the relationship.

“Underline that there are many issues in our bilateral relationship, in our cooperation, in our dialogue, there are in the current agreement in force and even more in the future (Package Agreement), what happens in one sector does not prevent us from continuing to advance in other sectors”, he pointed out at a press conference.

When presenting the EUROCLIMA+ Action Plan, within the framework of the Team Europe initiative for a green transition model in Mexicoassured that cooperation will continue to face climate change and meet the goals of reducing carbon emissions.

“Mexico has been a leader in the past and what we want is for it to continue to be a leader in the future in this area and that is what the initiative is about, accompanying and encouraging Mexico to continue giving priority to this effort and this issue,” said.

The action plan EUROCLIMA+, together with the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (SEDATU), contemplates four lines of action: sustainable mobility and smart cities; energy efficiency; circular economy and solutions to climate change.

“The green transition is an issue that is an absolute priority for the European Union both internally, within the framework of the green pact, (…) and at a global level. for this effort Mexico it is an essential partner because it is a country that poses important challenges in this area, it is a large economy, an emerging country with weight in the world”, he declared.

By 2027, the budget consists of 1,000 million euros at the regional level, that is, for Latin America and the Caribbeanof which 30% goes to the green transition, especially in vulnerable countries.

For her part, Cristina Marín, Cooperation attaché of the European delegation, listed that collaborations have already been made in mobility projects in some states such as Jalisco and Puebla, the feasibility of the Mayan Train and waste management, technical assistance in introducing water as a human right.
