Mexican peso depreciates after four days with advances

The Mexican peso depreciated this Tuesday against the American dollar. The local currency lost ground after having accumulated gains for four days, supported by monetary policy announcements from major central banks.

The exchange rate ended at 20.8173 units against a record of 20.7478 units yesterday, with official data from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico). That meant a loss of 6.95 cents for weight with a variation of 0.34 percent.

The cross traded in a range between a high of 20.8723 units and a low of 20.7064 units. Meanwhile, the Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback against six reference currencies, lost -0.06% to 96.49 units at the close.

The price was also influenced this Tuesday by concerns in the markets about the advance of the Covid-19 Omicron variant, after some European nations announced the return to containment measures.

For his part, United States President Joe Biden asked military doctors to support hospitals due to the rapid spread of the new Covid-19 mutation days before the second Christmas pandemic.

“The increase in Ómicron cases forced some countries to reimpose restrictions on mobility, which raised concerns about the economic recovery,” said Janneth Quiroz, deputy director of Analysis at Grupo Monex.
