Bridges Literary Festival
When: May 9-12
Where: Various locations, New Westminster

The New Westminster Public Library is behind this new festival celebrating the literary arts. Fifteen free events for book lovers of all ages will be held at venues across New West, including 21 book launches, plus workshops and readings. Events include a family history workshop, a panel on the art of writing, and a comic and zine creation workshop.
Second Annual Langley Craft Beverage Week
When: May 10-19
Where: Many places

The second annual Langley Craft Beverage Week showcases the borough’s craft beverage scene. Hosted by the Langley Loop Craft Collaborative, a network of local breweries, cideries and distilleries, the week features free and ticketed events including product launches, the Brewhalla Fort Langley outdoor festival and the inaugural Spirits in the Park event, featuring a selection of BC Craft Spirits. As an added bonus, members of the Collaboration have brewed a special beer for the week: Valley Berry Sour, brewed with a blend of five berries from around the Fraser Valley. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this drink will go to the Langley Food Bank.

Vancouver darkwave festival Verboden 2024 welcomes The Mission, also known as The Mission UK, on the final night of a four-day event. Drummer Alex Baum joins original band members Wayne Hussey, Craig Adams and Simon Hinkler, who formed the band in 1986, to play songs from a 10-album catalog that includes the songs Butterfly On a Wheel, Wasteland and Tyranny of Secrets, among others. . Their most recent album was 2016’s Another Fall from Grace, declared by one online scribe to be “the band’s best album since 1990’s Carved in Sand.” The Brussels duo Ultra Sunn opens.
BC Ukrainian Cultural Festival
When: May 11
Where: Clarke Foundation Theatre, 33700 Prentis Ave., Mission
Information: $13, $10, $1 (children under six) at bcucf.ca
Several Ukrainian dance groups from across British Columbia, including Surrey’s Kvitka, which won the Hopak Trophy last year for its performance of Ukraine’s fast-paced national dance, are performing at this year’s British Columbia Ukrainian Cultural Festival, along with one from Washington state, Barvinok of Seattle. . Vendors will offer a variety of items such as Ukrainian crafts, embroidered clothing and homemade pastries. There will also be food trucks serving traditional Ukrainian food on site. Following last year’s event, the BCUCF donated $4,800 to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation to support continued aid in Ukraine. This year, 20 per cent of admission fees will be donated to humanitarian efforts in Ukraine through the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. The doors open at 9 in the morning with an opening ceremony scheduled for 10.

Mary Poppins: The Broadway Musical

Vancouver’s Meghan Gardiner stars in the role made famous by Julie Andrews in this stage musical version of the books by PL Travers. Although the show follows the source material more closely than the famous Disney film, you’ll still hear the hits, including A Spoonful of Sugar, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Chim Chim Cher-ee and Feed the Birds.
